Insider Tip Québec

Quebec, the French-speaking province in eastern Canada, is still an insider tip for travellers. All around the Saint Lawrence River – a river stretching 3,860 km, connecting the south of the region with the Great Lakes in the USA – the cultural legacy of the North American Indians, Inuits, French and British flows together to create a lifestyle unique to North America.

Outdoor feeling and culture

Located directly on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River, both Montreal and Quebec City (the capital of the province) delight visitors with the harmonious coexistence of historic and modern architecture. The French influence is omnipresent, especially in the language and the excellent cuisine.

Montreal is a lively metropolis, a melting point of cultures from all over the world. It is named after Mont Royal, a prominent feature 233 m high. More than 100 festivals take place here every year. By contrast, Quebec City is known for its historic fortifications, Old Town and charming winding streets.

Moreover, roughly 30 national parks give visitors the opportunity to observe animals in the wild and enjoy a large selection of outdoor activities at any time of the year. Many of the parks are located less than two hours’ drive from either town, making it easy to combine a city break with an outdoor adventure.

The Lanaudière and Mauricie regions located north of the Saint Lawrence River between Montreal and Quebec City, also known as “Authentic Québec”, offer picturesque views, adventurous experiences and encounters that immerse visitors in the heart and soul of Quebec. The La Mauricie National Park is known for its many hills, woods and lakes. The Mont-Orford National Park is another popular national park in southern Quebec, which is best explored on foot. In fall, the sugar maple trees in the woods present an extravaganza of colours. The park is also home to white-tailed deer and great blue herons, which you can observe in their natural habitat. The park is a popular destination in winter for cross-country skiers and snowshoers.

Culturally-minded travellers should follow the trail of the Aboriginal peoples in Quebec. Quebec, the francophone heartland of North America, has established a culture within 400 years that looks back on a rich legacy. This culture was established by the First Nations, influenced by the French and British rulers and then shaped for a long time by the Catholic Church.
